How can social media impact a long-term disability claim?

On Behalf of | Apr 8, 2024 | Long-Term Disability

People post on social media without thinking too much about what they’re showing. For those who have a long-term disability claim, those posts can lead to a considerable issue with the claim if the posts show circumstances different from what’s in the claim.

With that in mind, people who have long-term disability claims open should ensure they’re very careful with what they post.

Insurance investigators may scrutinize social media

Part of the role of the investigator is to determine if the claim is valid or not. Social media posts can provide a look into what a person’s life entails. When the information posted on social media doesn’t match up with the claims in the long-term disability case, the claim may be denied or delayed.

For example, if a person’s social media shows them going out dancing with friends or playing basketball, it would be very hard to explain why they need long-term disability based on back pain.

Social media isn’t always what it seems

It’s possible that the posts someone makes on social media may be taken out of context. It may not show the aftermath of the activities that seem to discount the need for disability. For example, that night of dancing might have led to the person being unable to care for themselves for a period after.

For some, it might be best to avoid social media while the claim is still open. Others should consider limiting their posts. Working with someone familiar with these matters can help people determine what they can post and what should be avoided, as well as help with various other aspects of their cases.
